Flying!

I find it extremely interesting that when u put people on a plane for a long period of time they tend to get up in the aisles and exercise as if they are attending an 80's jazzersize class!

It is even more odd that people most likely to do this are those who look like they would lay on a couch for 7 hours without moving any muscles other than their jaw to crunch down on cheesy nachos!

Seriously people, sit down and maybe when you get off the plane join a gym and start eating less fat, that way you may prevent yourself from getting a blood clot when sitting on your fat arse watching tv. And that is all!!

Time to go home

We are sitting at the airport waiting to board our plane. I'm looking forward to getting home, hopefully we have a good flight.

We have had a great trip. Once we are home I will do a bit of a summary of our time away and give some awards out, stay tuned for which city will win the best city award!!

More physical Aimz!

Thought I best get in a few pushups whilst strolling the canals. Back into fitness squad on Tuesday so I thought I better get motivated!!

Beautiful tulips

What gorgeous tulips! My favourite flower. These were at the local flower market, only 8 euros for massive bunch!

Another beer!

Today the sun finally came out and we enjoyed a beer by a canal in Amsterdam. We took a canal cruise today too! Fab way to end our holiday.

Wednesday 8 June 2011

And so, another countdown begins

It is our last day of our trip tomorrow, I am not really counting Thursday or Friday because we leave early Thursday morning to head to the airport and will basically be traveling until Friday night.

Today we went out to see some windmills at Zaans Schanse. We had a great time wandering through the village and checking out the windmills, good for a photo or two although it was very cloudy today!

We got back to Amsterdam in the afternoon and decided to get some antipasto and cheese, all very super tasty and went down a treat with a bottle of wine!

Tomorrow we are going to head out for a canal cruise and a bit of souvenir shopping. Need to buy a tacky snow globe!

We have checked in online for our flights on Thursday and tomorrow we will get our bags all packed ready to head off bright & early.

For now though it is time to go to bed, it has been a long day. Look forward to getting some sleep, will be even better though when it is in our own comfy bed!! Goodnight!

More clog fun

Pete bought himself some clogs, shame they don't fit!

Windmills

We headed out to see the windmills today. Weather really left a bit to be desired but at least it was not raining!!

Indonesian feast, take 2

We decided to go back for more Indonesian tonight! Such an awesome meal!

Waiting for service

Check out this gorgeous customer who was waiting for service in the bar we were in!

Hmmmm what is Pete up to???

I turned my back for 2 seconds only to find Pete trying to sample some local goods!!

Having clog fun!!

I enjoyed a nice sit in a clog just before it started to rain! Amsterdam weather is worse than Melbourne!! Oh well, might have to go to a museum or something??

Amsterdam, so nice to be back!

We arrived in Amsterdam on Saturday, we were greeted by the most amazing weather. We walked to our apartment from the station and the place was buzzing, people riding in boats on the canals, guys on bucks nights and a strange smell wafting from the coffee shops!

Our apartment is so lovely! It is an old canal house and we are on the bottom floor, it is sort of like a basement but we look out onto the street. There are tulips on the table and when you open the cupboards it smells like my Dutch grandmothers house! So homely!!

It has been 13 years for me and 15 years for Pete since we visited Amsterdam last. Not a lot appears to have changed and I feel quite at home here, it is such an easy city to walk around, however it is very busy, there are tourists everywhere!

This morning we woke to rain which was a shame after yesterday's glorious sun. We ventured out at 11am and eventually the rain stopped. We went for a coffee, yes a coffee, no indulging in green substances for us and I had a yummy piece of apple tart! Delicious!

We took heaps of photos around the canals, it is just so pretty!!

Tonight we had Thai food for dinner and last night we had a fabulous Indonesian meal. Yes, I know we should be having Dutch food but it is hard to find.

We are hoping tomorrow the weather will be clearer but we will have to edit and see. We have 3 more days and then it is off home for us!! Can't wait to see Mac!!

Sunday 5 June 2011

Hamburger

We arrived into Hamburg on a public holiday. In Germany a public holiday means a public holiday, no shops are open, thankfully restaurants and bars are open, but otherwise it was an odd day to arrive. There were not many people around the main streets but as we got further into the city there were more people around.

We could not check into our hotel until 2pm and when we did we got given a really dodgy room! Unfortunately due to the public holiday rooms in Hamburg were really limited and we chose this hotel as a bit of a last resort, having said that though, we paid $190 a night. The room they gave us had attic windows and was super hot, the windows barely closed and the Venetian blinds were all falling apart, there was also a utility cupboard in the room with some sort of electrical switchboard. The bathroom was sort of across a hall way, it was obvious we had been given a different room to what we paid for. We went to complain and got told we could move the next day. The next part of the story is probably a little horrible for me to include in my blog, but let's just say, we finally got given a different room. It was slightly better, however some mould spray might have been handy in the shower, certainly not to Merry Megsy's standard of cleanliness!!

We spent most of our time in Hamburg around the Harbour area, it is a nice city but quite industrial. We went up the church spire, the lift made me feel quite ill, it was very high!

We ventured into the red-light district known as the reeperbahn, let's just say that was interesting!

We enjoyed a last German meal last night, weiswurst & leberkasse! We had a few wheat beers too!

This morning we are on the train to Amsterdam. Our train is full of young girls heading off to play a hockey match, giggling and irritating! Thank god for iPods! We change trains in 2hrs so I'm sitting back listening to the Foo Fighters, always a good way to drown out the noise of small children!

Saturday 4 June 2011

Hamburg

We have had a nice couple of days in hamburg! Will be happy to head to Amsterdam tomorrow though, our final destination!! Hamburg is cool, but man, it is a bit shonky and derro! Lots of beggars and some seriously weird people!

Friday 3 June 2011

Schnitzel

In Lubeck we had a tasty schnitzel with asparagus. Asparagus is in season and is everywhere! I totally love it! Yummy!!!

Wheat beer

Pete enjoying a wheat beer. You will note I am drinking wine, I am struggling to drink beer, i am looking forward to some nice wine upon my return home!

Lubeck

This is the old gate to Lubeck. It was originally a walled city. The old gate is quite spectacular even though on closer inspection it looked like it was about to fall down!!

Funny puppy

Man, I have spent half my holiday laughing at dogs! God I love dogs!! This was hilarious, we went into a sports store and there was a lady shopping with her dog! Got to love Europe, dogs are totally treated as equals and can go anywhere. We went to a cafe yesterday and sat next to a lady and her two Jack Russell's, they were so gorgeous and well behaved!!

Loving Lubeck

After 6 nights in Berlin we are now in Lubeck. Berlin proved to be an interesting city, there was a lot to see & do. One of the things we did was visiting the Olympic stadium and also the Hackesher Markt which was a lovely area full of beer restaurants! There was a great vibe there and we had a ball watching a clown busker who imitated people who walked by our restaurant, he was so funny!!

Our apartment in Berlin was great, it was nice to cook some meals and sort of feel like a local! I love shopping in supermarkets when traveling, I love seeing the different produce, it is a real highlight.

We left Berlin early Tuesday morning. We caught the train to Lubeck which is a small town formerly surrounded by city walls. We arrived at about 11 am and the weather was superb!

We checked into our hotel and headed out dressed for summer weather but soon realized it was a bit chilly. We had a beer and soon it was raining!

The rain stayed around for the rest of the afternoon but thankfully today (Wednesday 1 June) it is sunny and gorgeous!!

Today has truly been one of the best days of our whole trip, it was sunny but not too hot & Lubeck is truly a beautiful place! We spent the day wandering around and taking heaps of photos. We spent a few hours sitting in a riverside restaurant drinking german beer and watching the world go by. A couple sat next to us with their pet dogs, it was so nice, they were such cute puppies!!

Tonight we had a delicious meal and a few drinks at a cellar restaurant. It was so quaint, there were little individual booths each with pictures highlighting different facts about Lubeck.

For dinner we had a pork schnitzel with asparagus and hollandsaise sauce, so divine!! Asparagus is in season and it is so tasty!!

We head off to Hamburg tomorrow, not long to go now, only 1 more week. I look forward to Amsterdam on Saturday. But for now, time for bed!

(sent 1 June, wifi in Germany is pathetic)

Tuesday 31 May 2011

Curry wurst!!

Oh the joy of sausages! Berlin has been a delight. One of our favourites has been the curry wurst! Delicious!!

Thank god I go back to fitness squad soon!!

The Berlin wall

Today we visited check point Charlie and the went to the last remaining original section of the wall! It is amazing to think of how long this wall divided Berlin and that the fall of the wall was only 22 years ago.

Weather was a bit cooler today. Tomorrow we are going to head out for a tour of the Olympic stadium. Should be fun!

Lunch, weiswurst!! Yummy!!

For something different, pete enjoying a beer!!

Brandenburg gate

Enjoying sunny Berlin!

Berlin haupbahnhof

Just off the train from Warsaw.

A city that feels like home

We had a good train trip from Warsaw, the train left at 6.40am so it was an early start for us. We both slept well in our hotel in Warsaw, it was so nice and dark, something that has been lacking since we left Moscow. I just love a dark room and hotels/apartments just don't seem to have dark curtains.

We arrived into Berlin at 12.30, the train station in Berlin is amazing, we had no real difficulties trying to find where we had to go to catch our train to our apartment, it is very well sign posted and easy to understand the metro system!

Out apartment in Berlin is really lovely! It feels like we are living here. We did some groceries and actually cooked dinner, it was nice to eat in, we even had a nice bottle of wine.

Today was 28 degrees, it was absolutely gorgeous. We took a good walk around getting to know the city. I have been here before but that was 13 years ago, it is a bit of a drunken blur!

It really feels like Melbourne here sort of crossed with London. We both feel very at home!

We went to a beer Keller for lunch, sausages and beer, yum!!

So far, I am really enjoying it here. It is quirky, a bit arty and modern but with an historical feel.

The next few days will be spent seeing the sights and enjoying some museums. There is so much to do here, I think you could stay here a year and not even see all of the sights. This is what travel is about!!

Wednesday 25 May 2011

Woops!!

Pete ran into a pole today in Warsaw!

Gorgeous Warsaw

We had a fabulous day in gorgeous Warsaw. It is a city well worth a visit!

The old town square is a little busy with school groups but once you get off the beaten track there are some really magical spots!

This photo is of me in the old town square! The weather was just perfect!!

Warsaw

We caught the 7 am train from Krakow to Warsaw today. We checked into our hotel, the Novotel Warsaw.

We are only here for 1 night as we head off to Berlin tomorrow. It's funny being in a city for just one day, it sort of feels like I have just gone up to Melbourne for a day of sight seeing.

Warsaw is actually nicer than I thought it would be. The city was rebuilt after being bombed on the war, they recreated the old town as an exact replica of how it was prior. It is quite pretty!

We will spend the day wandering and obviously enjoy some more beer & polish cuisine!

Will send more updates once we get to Berlin, we are both excited to be going there, can't wait!

Tuesday 24 May 2011

Banana's

Yay, they had cheap bananas in the supermarket, we bought a couple to eat on the train tomorrow! Only 37 cents each, bargain!

Sunset over krakow

The sun was setting, such a beautiful evening!

Last night in Krakow

Our last night in krakow. We enjoyed a couple of beers in the old town, and sat watching people go by in horse drawn carriages.

Last day in Krakow

We head off to Warsaw tomorrow so today is our last day in Krakow.

We have spent the day wandering around taking photos. It really is so pretty here, we have seen a lot, but I feel there is so much more you could see. Anyone could spend hours walking around the old town looking in shops, drifting from cafe's, to bars and restaurants. It is a gastronomical delight!

We spent yesterday at Auschwitz, we arrived early to get there before the big groups. We ended up being there for over 5 hours. I don't really think I could describe the enormity of the crimes committed in both of the camps. Both museums (the former camps) give a good insight into the devastating loss of lives, it was extremely moving and an experience not to be forgotten. The size of the second camp is beyond belief.

Tonight we will head out for a final feast and will be having an early night. Our train leaves at 7.00 am and it is a half hour walk to the station with out back packs. I truly need the walk to, anything to burn off the extra kilojoules!!

Overall we have truly enjoyed Krakow, I would highly recommend it as a travel destination. History, beauty, food and drink - what more could you ask for!!

Monday 23 May 2011

Pete eating again!

Pete enjoying cabbage rolls with stuffing, a traditional polish dish.

Coffee.....

Finally had a coffee today, delicious!

I can't move after eating this!

Oh lord, this was such an evil meal! Chicken pouch, filled with veggies and cheese, on a bed of even more veggies dripping in cheese, cream and mustard. There goes my diet!! (not that I was on one anyway!)

Sunday 22 May 2011

Oskar Schindler, thunderous storms & anti gay rallies

It was a lovely morning this morning in Krakow. We went out and bought a loaf of fresh bread for breakfast, it was so fresh! Delicious! The bakeries here are just delightful!

We headed out early to go to the Oskar Schindler factory, it is a museum set in the old factory as featured in the movie Schindlers list. It was a good walk and well worth it, the museum was brilliant. The museum depicts what life was like in krakow pre war and during the nazi invasion, truly terrifying! We spent almost 3 hrs at the museum and then took a stroll through the former Jewish area of kamierez, very arty and bohemian!

As we headed up to the old square we noticed major police presence. The sky also appeared quite dark. We sat down for a beer and then heard what sounded like a protest rally, it turned out to be a bunch of right wing extremists marching around the square shouting out (in polish)some sort of anti gay slogans! It was very disturbing! A polish guy next to us yelled something out to them and the police told him off, then people demonstrating took pictures of the guy and clearly threatened him. It is hard to believe such people exist, especially given the atrocities of the past!

Not long after the rally broke up, there were massive thunderstorms. We retreated inside. I feel it was someone from above telling the demonstrators something, perhaps saying you are wrong to be so judgmental, hopefully they listened, but I doubt it!

Pete's main course

For main course Pete had duck with baked apple and gnocchi. It was so overwhelmingly huge, he struggled to eat more than half of it! The total bill including wine came to $46 including a tip!! I could not live here, I would end up weighing ten tonne!!

We had a great day, thankfully the schoolies have packed up, very short lived indeed, the poles clearly know how to celebrate schoolies more efficiently than we do!

My main course

I had beef scallops on a bed of red cabbage for main course, I had a borscht soup with ravioli parcels for entree. So delicious!!

Tonight's dinner

Tonight we went to another gorgeous cellar restaurant in the old town of krakow. Pete had a lovely pork terrine (not spam Hayley) for entree.

A dream destination, or is it schoolies week?

We finally arrived in krakow after our flight from St Petersburg. We were delayed in Warsaw by 1 hr so did not end up getting to our apartment until about 8.30. The apartment is great, very close to the old town, quite modern too!

We spent our first day in krakow just strolling around, the weather is amazing, we enjoyed a few beers sitting looking out to the main square, despite all of the tourists it is quite relaxing to sit back, enjoy a drink and do some people watching.

We booked our train ticket to go to Warsaw, we leave Tuesday the 24th at 7.05am, an early start for us that day! We spent the evening sitting by the old square enjoying a few more beers and watching the sun go down, so heavenly and relaxing!

Today we headed out for some photo taking. We first noticed some oddly dressed youths on the way to the old town. When we got into the square we realised there is a youth festival going on, end of term, a bit like schools week. They are all dressed in fancy dress costumes and there is a big stage in the old town playing dance music! Seriously, there goes my gorgeous Krakow experience!!

We are heading to Auschwitz tomorrow, thankfully that will get us away from the partying teens! I know I sound old, but really, who would choose to travel to the gold coast in schools week? Oh well, best make the most of the cheap booze, perhaps if I'm drunk as well they will be a bit more entertaining!!

Friday 20 May 2011

An unusual guest at our table

The restaurant we ate at was quite quirky, there was a manequin sitting next to us! Bizarre, but made for interesting conversation!

Pete's dinner

Wild boar goulash in a bread cup! Yummy!!

Dinner in krakow

A little bit hard to see due to dim lighting (romantic lighting!), but this was my dinner. Duck Breast with cranberry sauce & potato gnocchi. All for a measly $14! Delicious!

Old town krakow

We have had an amazing first day in Krakow! The weather was absolutely perfect and I feel like I have stepped into a fairytale, it is so beautiful here!

It is super full of tourists, but it has a wonderful vibe. The locals have proven to be very friendly. It is also super cheap.

We enjoyed a few drinks sitting in the old town square as the sun set, it was heavenly!

Thursday 19 May 2011

Train station

We caught the train into town from the airport, pretty easy.

Our plane

We arrived in krakow safely! The plane was a bit scary, I don't like being able to see the propellors!

Wednesday 18 May 2011

Waiting to check in

We fly via Warsaw. Just waiting for check in to open.

Pete at St Petersburg airport

On our way to krakow waiting at St Petersburg airport. We caught a mini bus to the airport called a marhusky, it cost $1 each! Bargain! There was a ukranian guy on the bus who smelt like he'd slept in a wine vat, he kept trying to speak to us in ukranian. It was quite funny, he ended up falling asleep, luckily he did not drool on me!

It's time to go, Megan & Pete

We are heading off to Poland today.  Our flight is at 3.25pm, we will get out to the airport by about midday as aparently it can be quite busy at St Petersburg airport.

We have been in Russia for 11 nights in total.  Overall we have had a good time here but I am glad to be moving onto a new destination.

Some of the highlights were Victory Day in Moscow, the Space Museum, the Peterhof fountains, The Hermitage Museum, finally getting into Red Square for the first time, The Kremlin in Moscow, the local beers (Tinkelhoff is a favourite) & of course Mu Mu restaurant.

Our favourite place overall has to be Moscow, it has a really great vibe and is quite cosmopolitan.  St Petersburg has been somewhat of a dissapointment, it shows the importance of expectation setting - my expectations of here were very high, however I was dissapointed by the lack of care in the city, the rubbish and the people who urinate in the streets!  I think St Petersburg appears to be a place that is preparing for the future but it seems a long way off - I would love to get a high pressure hose and go around cleaning here, it would make such a diference!!

We arrive in Krakow this afternoon at about 5.30pm.  We have an apartment booked which will be a really nice change.  I am looking forward to the food in Krakow - I will keep everyone updated with some photos.

Well must head off now and prepare to go - bags are already packed, so just a few last minute things to do and we will head to the airport.

Monday 16 May 2011

Toilet bus

The side view of the toilet bus.

Toilet bus

My worst nightmare came true today when I had to use the toilet bus. It is like a real bus full of toilets and they drive them like a bus. A lady sits in the drivers seat collecting money. You enter in the front door and go out the back. The doors to each cubicle barely cover your body!

Rocket, yeah.....

Check out this rocket!

Space Museum

Me on a mission to mars at the space museum!!

Cosmonaut Peter Byrne

Pete in outer space at the space museum.

Space museum

Pete at the space museum. Ground control to major Tom, your rocket is heading to Uranus!

Negative content to follow......

I am sorry to say but St Petersburg is not really floating my boat. We still have two days here and despite there being a lot we can still do, I would quite happily go now. I guess that is the downside of pre-planned travel.

We have seen some lovely things here including the hermitage museum and peterhof fountains, the weather has been great as well. We are going to walk over to the fortress today. We also found a really cool bar to go for a few drinks, always a plus.

So, why is it you'd be glad to go?, I hear you say? Well to put it bluntly, it is a bit feral here. You know on a Monday morning when you walk to work and you see beer bottles everywhere, it is like that here all the time, grotty and dirty. From our room I can see drunks pissing in the river, hmmm delightful!

Apart from that I also look forward to getting to krakow where I'm sure it will get dark at a reasonable hour, it is light here until 11.00pm. I know I'm on holidays, but after a day of walking, I am tired and need to sleep!

Woh is me!! Time to leave!! Looking forward to catching the plane on Wednesday!

Sunday 15 May 2011

Baltika brewhouse

We were delighted to discover Baltika brewhouse! The beer Pete is drinking is a steal at $4.36 per pint! Yay!!

Peterhof palace and fountains

We spent the day wandering the gardens of peterhof marveling at the magical fountains. We travelled over and back by hydrofoil. We also got charged foreign prices for a beer, grrrrrrr!!!!

Picasso

One of my favourite Picasso paintings! Violin and guitar, fab day at the hermitage.
